Tips for Eating Healthy While Traveling
Eating healthy at home is fairly easy, especially if you live close to a good farmer’s market or natural foods store and can make regular trips to get fresh food. Eating while traveling can present a few complications, which is why you may want to consider the following tips before embarking on your next trip:
Do some research ahead of time, so you’re not stuck with what you find when you get to your destination. Look for good restaurants that offer a variety of healthy foods (soup, salad, vegetarian/vegan options). Check out Yelp and Urbanspoon to help you find restaurants that cater to your dietary needs (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free friendly). You’ll also be able to check out menus and read others’ reviews so you’ll find some great new restaurants to try.
Learn the Language
For foreign destinations, it can pay off to learn a few foreign phrases before you leave, such as “is there meat in this?” or even “fruit platter” for when you’re in a pinch. Learn the local cuisine and decide ahead of time what you’re likely to eat when you arrive so you can learn how to order your chosen dishes.
No matter where you are headed, it’s always helpful to pack a few snacks that will travel well, including trail mix, nuts, dried fruit, and protein bars. A water bottle is a good idea too, so you can stay hydrated no matter where you go. You may find yourself in a situation where no healthy option presents itself, but if you can hold yourself over with a snack then you’ll have more time to find an alternative. If you opt for a heartier bar like our PB + Chocolate Chip Nirvana vegan protein bar (with 20 grams of protein), you can add a piece of fruit and feel well satiated until your next meal.
Get a Fridge
If you can find a place to stay that includes a fridge, you’ll have a much better chance of eating healthy while travelling, as you can go out and purchase your favorite foods (or try out some new flavors) and keep them fresh in your room. Stock up on fruit, veggies and hummus to snack on or even create a meal. Don’t kick yourself if you can’t eat healthy your whole trip – you are on vacation, after all. But the last thing you want is to return all relaxed and refreshed from your vacation, only to have to start over with your healthy eating plan. By going easy on the food pampering on your trip you’ll find that when you return you feel great and look great, as well as being ready to tackle whatever comes next! When traveling, how do you plan for healthy eating?
