7 Things You Should Know About GMOs
We’ve all heard the “hype” about GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms); first they were the saving grace for farmers in drought-prone areas, plus a solution to world hunger. Now researchers are singing a bit of a different tune as more long-term results are being explored. Here are some interesting statistics that may help you to decide whether avoiding GMOs is a wise choice:
1. GMOs Affect The Health of Our Bodies and The Planet
Since GMOs are relatively new, long-term studies are few and far between. One study of mice fed genetically modified soy over a 2-year period showed more acute signs of aging in the liver when compared to those fed non-GM soy (source: Department of Health and Human Services). Besides the impact to our own health, GMOs have an impact on our planet. Most GMOs (over 80%) are engineered to resist herbicides. This has led to a marked increase in toxic herbicide use, which can permanently destroy natural organics in our soil (source: Non GMO Project). There is also a concern that GMO crops can overtake natural crops as their tolerance levels are higher – meaning once established it may be difficult to revert to non-GMO crops.
2. Many Countries Are Paying Attention to GMOs
64 countries around the world now require GMO labeling, including China and all of the European Union. The U.S does not. (Source: Natural News). It’s time to ask ourselves: why are so many countries requiring the disclosure of GMO ingredients if it’s “safe” for our bodies and the planet?
3. Both Republicans and Democrats Want GMOs Labeled
91% of Americans want GMOs Labeled, including 89% of Republicans and 93% of democrats. (source: BlissTree.com) – it may be the only thing that both sides of the floor agree on these days!
4. Mega Millions Are Spent on GMO Labeling
So if so many people want labeling, why aren’t our public representatives listening? 30 million, that’s why. That’s the amount of money spent on GMO lobbying each and every year (source: Natural News).
5. The U.S. Accounts for the Majority of All GM Crops Planted Worldwide
Now if you’re asking yourself why so much money is spent lobbying for GMOs, here’s another sobering statistic: the U.S. accounts for about two-thirds of all the GM crops planted worldwide (source: GEFreeBC) – forcing GMO labeling could drastically impact farmers and food conglomerates in the U.S. It’s food for thought.
6. GMOs are Everywhere, But It’s Difficult to Determine Without Labels
An estimated 70% of foods sold in the supermarket contain GMOs (source: Ecomom) – so choosing to buy GMO-free foods can be a difficult decision, particularly when companies in the US do not have to label their products.
7. Organic = Non-GMO
Keep in mind that a product can be non-GMO without being organic, but a product can’t be organic without being non-GMO. So if you are sticking to an organic-only diet you are also GMO-free.
When you are shopping, look for organic items labeled with the USDA Organic Label, as this indicates it is also non-GMO (source: USDA). In addition, products labeled with Non-GMO Project verified are certified Non-GMO. If you are unable to find a USDA Organic or Non-GMO Project product, check out this database of non-GMO certified foods before you buy. If you still aren’t sure about a product, ask the manufacturer. It’s up to us to ensure the health and safety of our families, as well as to petition the Federal Government to start labeling foods containing GMOs so we can make an informed decision.
