Dawne's 22 Days Success Story

Dawne's 22 Days Success Story

This week’s 22 Days Vegan Success Story comes from Dawne Gee, co-anchor of the news at WAVE3 in Louisville, Kentucky. After reading an article by Jere Downs recounting her success with The 22-Day Revolution, Dawne was inspired to take the leap and switch to a healthy plant-based diet. With our Vegan Meal Delivery and The 22-Day Revolution, she’s on the road to improved health and has already shed 30 pounds. Dawne has graciously accepted our invitation to share the story of her transformation with us. Here we hear from Dawne, in her own words, about her 22 Days Vegan journey.

In Her Own Words

I was born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky. My hometown is situated along the border between Kentucky and Indiana right along the Ohio River. Although some will argue geographically it is a Midwestern town others stand strong it is truly Southern. You can argue longitude and latitude forever but if you look at the gastronomy of this great town there is no doubt of it Southern charm. We drink tea sweet enough to send you into a diabetic coma. Every meal is served with a biscuit. Meat is part of every meal and is included even in the vegetables we eat. A greasy side of fatty meat is used when cooking vegetables. Dinner is not complete without a sweet confection at the end. Coming from an African-American heritage, food is not nourishment it is a way of life. We celebrate with food. We grieve with food. We set the table and bring on the meal when we are just trying to work things out. It should have been no surprise that at the age of 21 I underwent my first serious surgery. I hard 3 very large gallstones made of cholesterol. My whole family wondered why I had a defective Gallbladder. It never crossed my mind that my problem was my diet. As the years continued so did my medical problems. I had a hysterectomy because of a large tumor on my uterus. A brain tumor was not far behind. Then the news of kidney cancer. Just a few weeks after the surgery that removed half of my kidney, I was diagnosed with a Gastro Intestinal Stromal Tumor and lost part of my stomach. To complicate all my surgeries and my medical conditions I suffered from IBS and Gastroparesis.  I either had a disastrous case of diarrhea or I could not go to the bathroom for a week or two. I was angry and I was sick. I can remember talking to my neurosurgeon and asking him how long did I have left in my life. As a single mother of three, I wanted to get my affairs in order so my children would not be burden by any loose strings after my death. For the first time in my disease-laded life, my Neurosurgeon Jonathan Hodes talked to me for over an hour about changing my health by changing what I eat. I felt like I was dying. I did not change my diet then.

The Turning Point

It was an article I read in the local daily newspaper that changed my attitude and in days my diet.  At the age of 53, I decided to change to a vegan life style. My view of that was a carrot for lunch and maybe some lettuce for dinner until I tried 22 Days Nutrition Vegan Meal Planner.  I never knew there were vegan recipes because my opinion of the vegan lifestyle was you really didn’t get to eat good food. I would laugh when people would say, “You don’t live to eat.  You eat to live.”  I would tell them they were not going to the right places to eat. As a News Anchor I’m blessed or cursed to know almost every chef in the city of Louisville.  Louisville is a foodie city with cuisine that will have you humming while you eat.  I learned those same chefs could create a masterpiece for my vegan diet.   Marco Borges’ plant-based meal program sent me an unbelievable array of meals for 2 months.  I would laugh out loud as I unpacked the box in amazement at the diversity of choices.  I read “The 22-Day Revolution” by Marco, which cemented my choice of this new life and expanded my understanding.  It is taking me a little time to build up my pantry to include the clean foods I need in my kitchen for many of my new favorite recipes.

Results from a Plant-Based Diet

I have been vegan now for almost nine months.  I have lost 30 pounds and apparently a very dull complexion.  People stop me to ask what my skin regimen is because I glow.  I tell them a vegan diet and they don’t understand. I had gone as long as 14 days without a bowel movement. Please continue to read because this is what food can do to you and for you.  I remember lying on the floor with a distended stomach. I could feel I needed to go but I could not. I had already used 3 enemas one day although the box advised against it. I took more than double the prescription medication given me as a laxative. It took hours to relieve myself little by little. I still have a few health issues but it has not yet been even a year on my vegan journey.  I feel good in the words of the late, great James Brown.  I would never believe that food could and would have such an enormous effect.  We buy luxury cars and we fuel them with the best and most expensive gas the station has to offer.  When it comes to our bodies, we don’t even think about what we are putting in it.  I’m responsible for this vehicle I call my body.  It sounds like an impossible diet if you eat like I used to, but once you change your habits and your food choices the change you will see in yourself is life changing.

You Can’t Replace Your Body

I am so grateful for the knowledge and the new way of life.  I can get another car, house or even job but I cannot replace my body.  I feel so much better that even going to the gym three times a week is a pleasure and not a chore.  Now when I join my family for a meal, it is the fellowship I enjoy not the food.  I try to slowly introduce to them healthier choices.  I don’t understand why or how we stay in the dark when it comes to caring for ourselves but I’m in the light now and I love it.
