Steve's 22 Days Success Story

Steve A. of Miami, Florida leads a very busy life as a sales manager in the produce industry. Between work and other responsibilities and commitments, he didn’t have as much time to devote to eating healthy. When he realized that his weight had crept up to an uncomfortable number, he knew that he needed to take the steps necessary to make a change for the better. He turned to 22 Days Nutrition and our Vegan Meal Delivery. Within his first 22 days of eating the healthy, plant-based meals, he dropped 13 pounds. And after 9 weeks, he dropped 25 pounds. Here Steve shares his Success Story with us.

22 Days Nutrition: Why did you decide to try a 22 Days Vegan Challenge?

Steve: My weight has always fluctuated and I got used to that. But when I noticed last summer that my weight hit 198 pounds, I thought, “this is not good.” Luckily, I have known Marco Borges for many years. I told him that I was ready to lose the weight and asked for guidance. He told me about the benefits of a healthy, plant-based diet and I was intrigued. Being a big meat eater (I had always loved having a good steak), I didn’t know if I could do it. But I was determined to try. Because of my very busy days, Marco suggested the Vegan Meal Delivery. All of the meals are prepared and all I would have to do is heat them up. He said, “eat the 3 meals a day that we send you and don’t eat anything else.” And I did. I started with the 22-day plan (3 meals per day) and within those first 22 days, I lost 13 pounds. It was a great start, but I was not at my target weight, so I continued with 2 more 22-day plans (for a total of 66 days) and by the end I had dropped 25 pounds. Not only had I lost the weight, I also realized that I was ready to venture out and start preparing some of my own plant-based meals. I finally understood that a plant-based diet could be delicious – that you didn’t need meat in order to be satisfied. I continued along with my own meals until I reached my target weight and lost a total of 30 pounds.

22 Days Nutrition: What surprised you most about doing the 22 Days Vegan Challenge and following a plant-based diet?

Steve: People always say “I could never give up meat” and I had always thought the same thing. But after following the 22 Days principles, what I realized was that I didn’t miss the meat at all. During my 9 weeks on the program, I learned how to eat better. As much as I liked steak before, when I tried it after losing the weight, I realized that I didn’t like it as much as I remembered. If it’s just okay, then why bother eating it? For me, this is a HUGE step. I used to eat a lot of red meat. Because of the variety of flavors in the Vegan Meal Delivery dishes, it tasted like a complete meal and it definitely was not missing meat. I also saw that you could eat a lot of the same meals that you can eat with meat or cheese and just remove those ingredients and it tastes just as good. It was a big surprise to me. What’s different now is that I don’t eat red meat and I don’t feel that a dish has to include meat. In the past, my thinking was always that a meal had to be centered around meat.

22 Days Nutrition: Tell us a little bit about your average day now that you’re following a plant-based diet.

Steve: Once, I reached my target weight, I did add back some fish and chicken to my meals, but I aim to keep my diet 70% plant-based. Since I do have busy days, I supplement my diet with Plant-Protein Powder smoothies for breakfast and/or lunch and have 22 Days protein bars for snacks. In the past, I would just not eat all day until dinner. Now my favorite meal for dinner is sautéed veggies over quinoa and topped with sliced avocado. If I don’t have a Plant-Protein Powder smoothie for breakfast, I will make a chia pudding – something I never thought I would have liked before. I do go to the gym more often because I lost the weight and I want to keep it off. I make it more of a priority to go on the weekends.

22 Days Nutrition: How has following a 22 Days Vegan Challenge impacted your life?

Steve: I finally dropped the weight that I wanted to get rid of and I learned a new, healthy way of eating. It also broke my habit of not eating until dinner (and then eating a meat-heavy meal). Now I am in the mindset that I need to eat 3 meals day. I also have more energy and better digestion – something I didn’t even realize that I was missing before.

22 Days Nutrition: What words of encouragement do you have for others who are getting started or are considering a 22 Days Vegan Challenge?

Steve: The biggest thing is that people fear that they can’t live without meat and it’s so not true. It’s very easy to do and you’ll enjoy the food. You can do a plant-based diet. It will be different, but that doesn’t mean that different is bad. I didn’t know if I could do it, but I was able to and I actually enjoyed it. If I did it, anyone can do it. Thanks Steve!
