6 Reasons to Go Vegan in 2017
It’s a New Year (woohoo!), and with that comes New Year’s resolutions. Most of us tend to focus on our health and how to improve it through diet and exercise, as well as to improve our overall health and well-being. Did you know that a vegan diet could help you with all of the above? While there are many reasons to consider cutting out animal products, here are just a few that might help you make the leap:
Reason #1: An All-in Diet Solution
Rather than focusing on a diet low in fat, calories, sugar, etc., choose one that’s all of the above but will still help you feel full. What’s the secret? Fiber! Vegan diets that include a good portion of grains and vegetables (especially green ones) as well as pulses and legumes are automatically high in fiber (to help you feel full) while low in everything else. You’d be surprised how easy it is to feel full on a vegan diet, without overdoing the calories.
Reason #2: Full Body Health
So, when you take out excessive calories, fat, and sugar, what do you get? Better health, of course! The high fiber content helps to improve your digestive system and prevent cancers related to that area (prostate, rectal, colon, etc.) while the rest of your body reaps the benefits of more nutrition and a more substantive intake of vitamins and minerals. You can expect lower cholesterol levels, a reduced risk of heart disease, lower blood pressure, and cancer risk, and overall increased health and reduction in illness.
Reason #3: Amazing Side Effects
Rather than the common side effects of some diets (hunger pangs, mood swings, decreased energy), you can expect some amazing side effects with a vegan diet. How about clearer skin? Reduced allergy symptoms? More energy? Less migraines and premenstrual pain? Stronger hair and nails? If you like any (or all) of these side effects, get started.
Reason #4: Protected Pocketbook
While not health related, many of us make resolutions in the New Year about spending and saving money. Well, a vegan diet can help you here as well. Studies have indicated that a vegan diet can save you approximately $750 a year – more if you are smart about what you buy and like to cook in larger batches and freeze for later.
Reason #5: Mental Well-Being
Your body feels better, you have more cash on hand, but what about your mental well-being? Besides having a more nutritious diet to fuel and balance your brain, you can enjoy all the feel-good feelings associated with an animal-free diet. You’re helping prevent animal cruelty, you’re helping to reduce global famine (since people food crops feed more people than animal food crops), and your food choice has less impact on the environment. Isn’t that awesome?
Reason #6: Eat Healthier Versions of Your Favorite Foods
Many people fear that they’ll miss their favorite foods when switching to a plant-based diet. But your favorite foods are easily made plant-based – and they are typically healthier too! Like curry? Curried veggies are a hit with vegans. Pizza? There are so many delicious plant-based cheeses available – with no saturated fat. And just a quick search for vegan tacos and you’ll find endless options for fillings including Portobello mushrooms, sweet potatoes and even walnut meat (find Marco’s recipe in The 22-Day Revolution!).
So, why not hop on board? Even if you just give it a try for 22 days, you’ll notice a difference and likely want to keep going. Just three weeks – you can do it!
