22Days Nutrition: Tell us how you got started with a 22 Days Vegan Challenge.
Tanya H: I work full-time as an accountant in Dallas, Texas. I graduated college in 2011, but never took the time to focus on regaining my health from the many late nights of fast food eating. Sure, I joined a gym and felt I could just exercise and I would lose the weight, but I just maintained versus losing. I would juice and lose weight, only to gain it back and then some. I felt that bad cycle had to stop. I just happened upon The 22-Day Revolution while visiting a bookstore and it intrigued me. As I began to read, I saw “22 Days Vegan” and tied it to the fact that Beyoncé posted something about a similar challenge a little over a year ago. When I read her forward, it all clicked.
22DN: Why did you choose to try a 22 Days Vegan Challenge?
TH: Although I will admit I’ve done fad diets, I’ve never been an advocate of them. I would always say more vegetables and more exercise is the way to go. I read Marco’s book in just 3 days because it fell completely in line with everything I had been thinking to do, but never took the time to actually do it. The logic is there: if it comes from the ground you can’t get any healthier than that for your body.
22DN: Tell us a little bit about your average day now that you’re following a plant-based diet.
TH: When I wake up, I no longer feel groggy or heavy from an unhealthy dinner. My headaches have significantly decreased, and I no longer crave coffee like I used to. Breakfast usually consists of the lean green machine, or a berry banana smoothie I make using almond milk, strawberries, blueberries and bananas. Lunch is tacos made from vegan tortillas with spinach/kale, black beans, avocados, quinoa (or brown rice) or a stuffed sweet potato. Dinner, I will usually have a salad with quinoa, lentils, tomatoes or, baked eggplant with Pico de Gallo.
22DN: How has following a 22 Days Vegan Challenge impacted your life?
TH: I’m all about experiencing new things. It certainly influenced me not to think about what vegans cannot eat and more so the plentiful choices they have available. I am a lot happier emotionally and my confidence is surely boosted.
22DN: What health improvements have you seen?
TH: I have lost 15 lbs. Although I’m often told I have clear skin, I have received a lot of additional compliments recently about my skin appearing a lot clearer. My headaches have greatly decreased as well. Even the few I may have often go away without any medication needed.
22DN: What words of encouragement do you have for others who are getting started or are considering a 22 Days Vegan Challenge?
TH: Certainly read Marco’s book. It’s great mental preparation, which is ultimately needed to succeed in the program. Don’t jump into it cold turkey. As you read, start eliminating the foods not included in the challenge. It certainly makes a difference. Plan your meals one at a time and do not get overwhelmed. Then go for it. Most people might dismiss Marco’s book as another fad diet, but it really works! I read about other diets and think how illogical they sound, even the few I’ve tried.
